An Alexandrian Dilemma -- Sterling Silver and Pearl Slide on Neckwire

$97 USD (price includes worldwide shipping)

Redirect to Etsy.com...

The Piece:

Alexander the Great solved his Gordian problem with the edge of a sword... this precious little puzzle would have proven more difficult for him to unravel with brute strength alone!

Hand-sculpted sterling silver knotwork, textured like silken rope and oxidized to bring out its three-dimensionality, balances below a similarly textured sterling silver neckwire. A large, luminous, peg-set cultured pearl completes the sophisticated look.

Flexible neckwire is commercially bought, and closes with a secure friction clasp.

The Process:

I started with PMC (precious metal clay), an expensive putty-like material that is essentially pure silver particles suspended in an organic binder. I carefully wound and knotted the clay, and then fired it in a kiln to burn off the binder and fuse the fine silver. This became my master model!

I sent the master model off to a casting company to have a mold made, and then had the knot cast in sterling silver. After cleaning the casting, I gradually hammered up the top loop so the slide would hang properly, textured the entire piece with a hammer handpiece, fabricated my peg setting and set the pearl.

The Particulars:

Neckwire: sterling silver (purchased), approximately 16"
Slide: sterling silver (cast and fabricated), cultured pearl. Slide is approximately 30mm (1 1/4") tall.

A note on PATINATION/BLACKENING: The process of oxidization that I use will wear off, gently, as the piece is worn. This is characteristic of silver and I prefer to leave the blackening this way, as I believe it enriches the pieces to have it reflect its wearer's habits.

A note on PEARLS: All of the pearls I use in my work, unless otherwise clarified, are cultured pearls. "Pure" pearls that are wholly formed in nature are incredibly rare and their price reflects that -- cultured pearls are the same process guided by human hands and the pearls are much more affordable. None of my pearls are knowingly below a B grade, though some may exhibit surface imperfections or baroque irregularities... please view pictures with some scrutiny if this is important to you.

A note on COLOURS: Colours within my photographs may vary due to different lighting, angles and backgrounds. Colours may also vary depending on your monitor settings. If specific shade is of utmost importance to you, please contact me for further photographs and/or descriptions.
